Question #1: What is a micronation?

There are many different concepts of what a micronation is. A good overall definition of a micronation is a group of people who claim to be a sovereign nation, but is not recognized by any established state, or macronation. Here are two definitions of what micronations are:

a) A micronation is an entity created and maintained as if it were a nation and/or a state, and generally carrying with it some, most or all of the attributes of nationhood, and likewise generally carrying with it some of the attributes of statehood. Though a micronation may well have begun as a mere drollery, it has the potential (given the evolution of a sufficiently vital national culture) to develop into a true nation, and possibly to achieve statehood.

b) Micronations, microstates, imaginary countries, countercountries, unrecognized nations, or ephemeral states, are all terms for countries which have been declared independent by (usually eccentric) individuals or small groups, but unlike other such attempts, fail to achieve widespread diplomatic recognition. Many have only one inhabitant; others are larger. Most seem to consist of a single Grand Poobah, with or without a coterie of petites Poobahs. Talossa, however, counts over 50 citizens who have been part of its wild multiparty political structure. And there are reportedly 20,000 people with Hutt River citizenship or honors--more than several members of the UN!

In most cases, Micronation founders have declared dominion over land that actually exists; often tiny, isolated islands, sometimes under several feet of water. Like other countries, some of these nations have proclaimed declarations of independence, adopted constitutions, sought diplomatic recognition, sent out envoys extraordinary and ministers plenipotentiary, displayed coats-of-arms, and issued stamps, passports, and currency.

Question #2: Are Micronations REAL Nations?

It depends on who you ask!! If you call up your local embassy and ask if a micronation is a REAL nation, they will probably laugh at you. However, most micronationalists maintain that micronations are legitimate nation-states. It is impossible to participate in nation-states without believing that they are sovereign nations, not just "toys". Many micronations are very serious, and only have diplomatic relations with nations as serious as they are.


Question #3: Who can start a micronation?

Anybody, even YOU can start a micronation. You need to think of the basic things about your micronation such as:
a) a name
b) national symbols
c) government
d) basic set of laws
e) etc.

At the end of this FAQ there is a list of resources for those planning on starting their own micronation.

However, new micronations must work VERY hard to gain citizens and survive -- most nations last less than a month, and have fewer than five citizens. It is much wiser to join one of the already established micronations first, and if you still REALLY want to start your own nation, wait until you are a veteran to the micronational world.

IF you plan to start your own micronation, you need to do SOMETHING to attract citizens. The BEST way to do this is by enticing people with government offices, and letting the people run the government. If you can not do this (e.g. you want to have an absolute monarchy) you must attract them by some other means, like an interesting culture or a revolutionary new society.


Question #4: What are the Intermicronational Games/IMG?

The IMG are games hosted yearly by a well recognized member of the micronational community. They are based on the macronational Olympic games, and are divided into two groups of events. The first group are the offline events, which test the physical prowess of various members of the participating micronations. The second group of events, or online events test participants skill at board games and card games available online. Prizes are awarded for nations and "athletes". Question #5: What is Loss? What is Lom? Etc.

There are several intermicronational treaty organizations available for micronations. LOSS (League of Secessionist States) and LoM (League of Micronations) are two of the most well-known. Most organizations prohibit "war" between member-states, require member-states to defend others, and provide an arena for diplomatic negotiations.

Question #6: This all seems kinda dorky, something like final fantasy or another RPG game. Are micronations RPG's?

MICRONATIONS ARE NOT RPG'S!!!! I can not stress this enough. Although there are some micronations, like Dreamland, who are mostly fantasy, the majority of micronations consider themselves sovereign entities, and claim real land on Earth. Most micronations despise RPG's, and some go as far as to prohibit their citizens/subjects from participating in micronations.
